Dr.
Daniel is Professor of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
in the Departments of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering
at Northwestern University. Prior to his appointment in 1986, he
was Professor and Director of the Mechanics of Materials Laboratory
at the Illinois Institute of Technology and Science Advisor at the
IIT Research Institute. He attended the National Technical University
of Athens, Greece and received B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from
the Illinois Institute of Technology.
His interests and experience
encompass all facets of experimental mechanics with special emphasis
on the mechanics of composite materials and nondestructive evaluation.
He has pioneered test methods for characterization of composite
materials. He serves on the editorial boards of Composites and is
an Associate Editor of the Journal of Applied Mechanics. He is a
Fellow of the Society for Experimental Mechanics and the American
Academy of Mechanics.
He has received two Hetényi
Awards (SEM best papers, 1970 and 1976), an SPI best paper award
(1975) , the B. J. Lazan award of the Society for Experimental Mechanics
for distinguished contributions in experimental mechanics (1984),
and the Distinguished Research Award of the American Society for
Composites (1996).
He has lectured at home
and abroad; is the author of over 200 publications and nine chapters
of books; co-author of a monograph entitled "Experimental Mechanics
of Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials;" and a textbook entitled
"Engineering Mechanics of Composite Materials," and editor of ASTM
STP 787, "Composite Materials: Testing and Design."
